:: Email - Introduction
Email, or electronic messaging has become the most used form
of transferring business messages in the 21st century. Email allows
a person to create a written message on a computer, then send
it to any other person worldwide who has an email address, essentially
for free. The speed that email travels is one of it's greatest
benefits, a brief text only message from the UK to Australia will
take only a few seconds. It is possible for businesses to have
an internal use only email system, but this is increasingly uncommon,
email is most useful when able to communicate with 3rd parties
outside your organisation. To achive this, three key items are
required:
- Computer - to run the email software
- Email Software - to allow a staff member to write an email
- Network - the means to link the email software to other office
computers or remote computers on the internet
Whilst it's immediate benefits are well known, more recently
email has become more problematic with the increased prevalence
of viruses (see Services>Virus Protection and Security) and
spam. Spam is the term used to describe unwanted emails that are
frequently delivered to your 'inbox' that you do not wish to receive
and have not requested. Increasingly, these messages not only
waste your time, but also contain offensive content.
- Our skills and experience
Compology understands email from the most basic setup - a single
computer linked to the internet via a modem, to the complex multi-office
client server based email setup, using a centralised email server.
We are skilled in using Microsoft's Exchange 2000/3 server software,
but are also familiar with smaller, less complex packages to suit
smaller businesses.
Email tasks we can help you with:
- Troubleshooting - your email is usually the prime computing
service you use, and when it fails it can be disastrous. We
can diagnose the problem and get you working again fast.
- Installations big and small - We'll talk to you about
your email requirements, explain in simple terms the options
available to you, and install and configure a complete email
package that is right for your business.
- Exchange 2000 and 2003. We can help you with reconfiguring
Exchange, adding new users, setting up remote and web-based
access to your emails, sharing calendar and mailboxes and implementing
proper backup of the server.
- Proper email protection including spam removal and virus
protection.
- How email can benefit your business
An email address is now expected for business staff enabling
them to provide a rapid turnaround for enquiries and support for
your customers. Email also provides a convenient way of communicating
when working with overseas customers, both in terms of reduced
costs and time differences.
Electronic messaging can also be a useful way to communicate
the same message to many people at once, be it an internal staff
message, or a sales promotion to your customers. Remember, for
bulk messages sent outside your organisation, you must ensure
that you have asked permission from your intended recipients first,
otherwise you'll be considered a "spammer". |
